Citroën's €15,000 Gamble: The 2CV Concept Just Made the Brand's Own Sedans Look Redundant
Citroën sedan Visit Brand ↗

For years, Citroën has been playing the same game as every other European volume manufacturer: push the lineup upmarket, add equipment, stretch the price, and hope nobody notices the cars are drifting further from what made the double-chevron special in the first place. The C5 X, the C4, the C5 Aircross — all competent, all comfortable, all sitting firmly in the €30,000-to-€45,000 bracket. And then there's the 2CV Concept. An electric reinterpretation of the most democratic car ever built, targeting a €15,000 price point. It's a grenade rolled into the middle of Citroën's own showroom.

Because this isn't a design study destined for a glass case in Paris. It's positioned as a production-intent machine, complete with a roll-up fabric roof — a detail that signals the same utilitarian honesty that defined the original 1948 car. The headlines have been unanimous in their framing. Media Stellantis calls it "Time 2 Meet Again." Automotive World confirms the €15,000 target. Auto Express reports a £13k preview. Road & Track describes a sub-$17,000 EV. Motor1 calls it an "ultra-affordable city car." Every outlet has latched onto the same number, and rightly so, because that number is not a marketing flourish. It's a strategic threat.

The Sedan Problem

Here's the uncomfortable truth Citroën now has to confront: if the company can build a genuinely desirable electric car for fifteen thousand euros, why should anyone pay triple that for a sedan that no longer has a compelling answer to the question "why?"

The current lineup is built on the assumption that customers will pay a premium for space, refinement, and the particular French interpretation of comfort that the brand calls Advanced Comfort. That assumption has held for years. But it holds only as long as the entry point to Citroën ownership remains meaningfully above the price of a well-equipped Dacia or a Chinese import. The 2CV Concept collapses that hierarchy. If the cheapest Citroën is also the most charming, the most distinctive, and the most culturally resonant — and it costs less than half the price of a C5 X — then the sedans are no longer the sensible default. They are the expensive compromise.

Identity Crisis

There is also the matter of identity. Citroën's sedans have spent years trying to look like they belong in the premium conversation, with sloping rooflines and chrome accents and increasingly aggressive front fascias. The 2CV Concept does the opposite. It looks like nothing else on the road, and it does so without a single ounce of shame. Car and Driver called it "full of adorable, whimsical details." The Autopian liked it but wanted one thing changed. Engadget simply noted that the 2CV is back.

The consensus is not that the car is perfect, but that it is unmistakably Citroën in a way the C5 X has never quite managed. That is a problem for the sedan lineup, because it exposes the extent to which those cars have been designed by committee rather than by conviction.

The Broader Squeeze

The broader context makes the pressure worse. Citroën is not operating in a vacuum. Chinese manufacturers are flooding Europe with competent, well-equipped EVs at prices that undercut the established brands by thousands. The 2CV Concept is Citroën's answer to that threat — a car that competes on price without competing on anonymity. But it is also an implicit admission that the old strategy of moving upmarket has failed.

You cannot credibly sell a €40,000 sedan on the strength of its comfort seats when your own €15,000 hatchback is the one generating all the excitement. The 2CV Concept does not just sit alongside the sedans. It renders them redundant.

A Referendum on the Brand

Citroën now faces a choice that is as much philosophical as it is commercial. It can treat the 2CV Concept as a niche play, a charming distraction while the real business of selling mid-size cars continues unchanged. Or it can accept the logic of its own creation: that the future of the brand lies in affordable, distinctive, genuinely French electric vehicles, and that the sedan lineup as currently constituted has no place in that future.

The €15,000 2CV is not just a new car. It is a referendum on everything Citroën has spent the last decade becoming — and the sedans are losing.

Media Stellantis叫佢「Time 2 Meet Again」。

Car and Driver叫佢「full of adorable, whimsical details」。
